UK carrot growers will have the opportunity to view 70 variety trial plots from all the main breeders, at the next British Carrot Demonstration Day.
This year’s event will be held in Serlby, Doncaster kindly hosted by D Skelton & Sons and Strawsons Ltd on 4 October 2018, with sponsorship from AHDB and support from NIAB.
Ian Holmes, Strawsons Ltd, said: “Alongside the traditional variety demonstration - containing more than 70 plots from 7 different breeders - there will also be opportunity to see demonstrations of new crop protection technology with plots from Bayer Crop Science looking at nematicide and herbicide work and Syngenta aphid control trials.
“The site also hosts this year’s AHDB SCEPTREplus herbicide trial screen where products with potential for use in carrots are being assessed, particularly important as the life of linuron comes to an end. Supporting the field trials will be an array of trade stands including machinery, crop protection, nutrition, storage and other associated businesses. This promises to be a key date for all those involved in the UK carrot industry”.
Joe Martin, Crop Protection Senior Scientist at AHDB, said: “The carrot and parsnip SCEPTREplus trials this year have been looking at refining some of the promising treatments identified from Year 1. It is great that we have been able to have plots at the event to show growers some of the high priority work in finding alternatives for weed control.”
The event holds a trade exhibition throughout the day seeing over 30 companies from seed, chemical to machinery, giving an excellent opportunity for growers and suppliers to meet. Trade companies are invited to submit their most innovative product or services, from which members of the BCGA Research & Development Committee will decide a winner.
