The highly regarded Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) is the world's leading sports turf consultancy. It conducts annual amenity grass seed trials which are among the best in Europe. The results are published each year by the British Society of Plant Breeders in the BSPB Turfgrass Seed Booklet, one of Europe's most informative listings for evaluating the quality and suitability of different turf grass cultivars. This year's edition had a pleasant surprise in store:
DSV varieties were placed in the top 4 out of 100 entries in the S1 list – perennial ryegrass for sports uses. “Our perennial ryegrass cultivar EURODIAMOND was ranked top turf grass for sports uses for four consecutive years”, commented Lars Obernolte, product manager at DSV AG. “I think we can cope with the fact that it has been knocked off pole position by EUROPITCH, a new DSV variety”, he grinned. In fact, with one third of the top 25 turf grasses coming from the DSV stable, the Deutsche Saatveredelung is one of Europe’s leading turf grass breeders.
“It’s amazing to be placed 1 – 4. This makes us the only company to offer a reseeding mixture comprising varieties ranked in the top 5”, said international sales manager Daniel Westermann in response to the news.
The success of other species such as red fescue, tall fescue and smooth meadow grass further underline DSV’s international expertise in turf grass breeding.
“The results of current trials indicate that DSV’s breeding success is set to continue", added Cord Schumann, director of turf grass breeding. “Apart from the UK, from next year five new cultivars will be listed in France alone, which demonstrates clear progress in terms of disease resistance, sward density and leaf fineness."
This makes Deutsche Saatveredelung one of the very few turf grass suppliers on the market to offer breeding, production, advisory services and sales from a single source. Security of supply and customer service will always lie at the heart of the company’s operations.
