European Plant Science Organisation - On the Advocate General’s opinion regarding mutagenesis and the Genetically Modified Organisms Directive

Brussels, Belgium
January 18, 2018

The  European  Plant  Science  Organisation  welcomes  the  Advocate  General’s opinion  in  case  C-528/16 published  today  (18  Jan  2018)  as  an  important  step  in clarifying  the  European  Directive  2001/18/EC  (on  the  deliberate  release  into  the environment  of  genetically  modified  organisms)  concerning  organisms  modified  by recent mutagenesis  techniques  that  appeared  after  2001.  The  opinion  provides  a  general  scheme  to  follow  now  by  the  European  Court  of  Justice. EPSO  awaits  the  decision of the Court of Justice of the EU foreseen to be taken and published in 2018.

This first reaction opinion was developed by Ralf Wilhelm, Joachim Schiemann, Peter Rogowsky and Karin Metzlaff on behalf of the EPSO Agricultural Technology Working Group.
