Visit Barenbrug at The Royal Ulster Winter Fair - 14 December 2017
Stand EK54 at The Eikon Exhibition Centre, Belfast
Dairy farmers across Northern Ireland, who are visiting the Winter Fair in Belfast this month, will be able to pick up a free guide that’s designed to help them grow more grass in 2018.
The Barenbrug Dairy Guide 2017/18 has been developed by agricultural grass experts at Barenbrug - one of the UK’s leading producers of forage grass varieties and mixtures. Offering practical advice for grass grazing management, the guide is crammed full of useful information that can help dairy farmers manage their grassland more efficiently to maximize yields and profitability.
The guide looks at the science of good grass and includes facts and figures about animal and plant physiology. It features advice on good grazing practices including when to graze grass and how to perfect pasture pressure. There are also hints and tips for looking after leys long-term, and successful soil management and seed selection.
During the Winter Fair, the Barenbrug team will be available to talk to farmers about any specific grassland challenges they are facing. The team will also be offering advice on specific grass varieties and mixtures suited to growing conditions in Northern Ireland. At the show Barenbrug and AFBI will launch Caledon - an intermediate tetraploid perennial ryegrass that has been bred to offer obvious improvements in yield and disease resistance. The release of Caledon is timely given that foliar diseases such as rust and leaf spot have been increasingly evident in Northern Ireland over the last few years.
Caledon is a cross between the German grass variety Delphin and the AFBI variety Dromara. It has a heading date of 29 May and offers a very high total cutting yield in year one and three (108 and 105); a high second cut yield of 117; and good second cut quality of 72.30.
If you aren’t going to the Winter Fair, digital copies of Barenbrug Dairy Guide 2017/18 can be downloaded from: www.barenbrug.co.uk/agriculture-brochures where you can also order hard copies to be sent to you by post.
The Barenbrug Dairy Guide 2017/18 is the second document in a series of information booklets that the business is producing to help farmers. Earlier this year, the team published its guide to brassicas and forage crops. Further guides are planned for next year.
