- The goal is to generate concrete solutions for agriculture worldwide
Bayer India has selected three young delegates to participate in the third edition of the global Youth Ag-Summit to be held from October 9-13, 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. The Youth Ag-Summit is a platform that provides young leaders the opportunity to share their ideas, best practices and explore the role of modern agriculture in feeding a hungry planet. Bayer, together with its partners: Groene Kring (GK) and Fédération des Jeunes Agriculteurs (FJA) is organizing the summit.
To participate, prospective delegates were asked to submit an essay of 1,500 words on the topic of food insecurity. The goal was to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending hunger, achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture. More than 100 essays were received from all corners of India. After a review by a panel of experts, three finalists were chosen on the basis of their passion for agriculture, their vision of a world without hunger and how youth can play a role in helping feed the world’s growing population.
The three delegates chosen to represent India at the Youth Ag-Summit are:
- Apoorva Valli Shankar, a 25-year old educator from Chennai; who is passionate about the role of rural women in improving agriculture and bringing in gender equality in agriculture
- Soumyajit Paul, a 24-year old student from Kolkata, who is enthusiastic about how frugal innovation can power irrigation in Indian farms
- Sudhanshu Purwar, a 24-year old student from Kanpur, who believes strongly about enhancing the food supply chain to reduce malnutrition among children
During the summit, they will share their diverse experiences and work together to generate innovative, sustainable and actionable solutions to solve global food security challenges. Across five days, the delegates will undertake group projects and participate in industry tours, as well as learn from expert guest speakers. The end-objective is to enable the delegates to come up with new ideas that can drive agricultural progress across the globe and also be put into practice in their local communities.
