USDA/AMS seeks nominees for United Sorghum Checkoff Program Board

USA
April 18, 2017

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is seeking nominations for positions on the Sorghum Checkoff Program Board to fill five vacancies include three at-large producer member positions, along with one producer position each for Kansas and for Texas.

Any U.S. sorghum producer that owns or shares in the ownership and risk of loss of sorghum can be considered for nomination. All eligible producers are invited to seek nomination by May 30, 2017. A sorghum producer must be nominated by a Certified Producer Organization and submit a completed application.  USDA encourages board membership that reflects the diversity of the individuals served by its industry.

For more information, a list of Certified Producer Organizations or a copy of the nomination, visit: https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/research-promotion/sorghum.

Composed of 13 members, the Board administers a research and promotion program authorized by the Commodity Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 1996.  The USDA selects appointees from producers nominated by a Certified Producer Organization.

Since 1966, Congress has authorized the establishment of 22 research and promotion boards that are industry-funded and empower agricultural industries with a framework to pool resources and combine efforts to develop new markets, strengthen existing markets, and conduct important research and promotion activities. The AMS provides oversight, paid for by industry assessments, which helps ensure fiscal responsibility, program efficiency and fair treatment of participating stakeholders.
