Pulse growers and members of BEPA (British Edible Pulse Association) were given the opportunity this week to compare the latest varieties alongside established varieties at demonstration trials run by I’Anson Brothers Ltd near to their mill at Masham, North Yorkshire.

Howard Jackson of I'Ansons commented: “We have held trials of combining peas at Mark Sampson's farm for a number of years and have added field beans for the first time this year. Our trials are not a replacement for official trials, but they do work very well for pulse growers and the trade to take a good look at new varieties alongside existing ones to see how they are shaping up in the field.”

This year's trials included Fury, a spring bean newly added to the 2010 PGRO Recommended List with a provisional (P1) recommendation.

Theo Labuda, managing director of LS Plant Breeders Ltd noted, “Fury is a high yielding, pale hilum type with export potential. The variety has good standing ability, is of medium height, and has moderate resistance to downy mildew. Fury is higher-yielding than the market leader Fuego, and is from the same breeder, NPZ Lembke of Germany.”
