March 22, 2017

Once again Aber varieties marketed by Germinal are the top performing varieties on the 2017 Recommended List and Teagasc Pasture Profit Index (PPI).

This is the 3rd year in a row, where Germinal varieties have demonstrated superior performance on the Teagasc PPI. The Teagasc PPI – ranks varieties in economic terms – on performance in the key traits – spring, summer and autumn DM yield, quality, silage DM yield and persistency. Germinal varieties hold 6 of the top 10 places overall on the 2017 PPI.

AberClyde a new intermediate tetraploid is the highest performing variety overall on the PPI at €206 per ha/year.

AberMagic, retains its position as the best intermediate diploid – at €199 per ha/year – excelling in seasonal and total DM yield, quality and persistency.

AberGain, maintains its position as leading late tetraploid since the inception of the Teagasc Pasture Profit Index with a value of €169 per ha/year. AberGain is unbeatable in terms of its quality while also demonstrating excellent seasonal and total DM yields.

AberChoice is the leading late diploid €175 per ha/year – and the highest diploid variety for quality on the PPI, with excellent seasonal yield, persistency and palatability.

Seagoe – excellent intermediate tetraploid – demonstrates excellent quality and very high silage yield performance. Ideal variety in silage mixtures targeting a cutting date in late May.

Dunluce – A proven performer on Irish farms – excellent variety under both intensive grazing and intensive silage systems. Good seasonal yields, excellent quality and high performance under a 2–cut silage system.

AberWolf – a new variety to the list for 2017. AberWolf is an intermediate diploid with a total PPI of €171.  Excellent quality performance on the PPI, good 2–cut silage yield and strong spring and autumn growth.

Drumbo – a late diploid variety, ranked as the 2nd best late diploid on the PPI, beaten only by AberChoice. Excellent quality value and ideally suited to intensive grazing mixtures to ensure good ground cover (sward density) and persistency of the sward.
