As we approach the final stages of winter barley drilling, it is worthwhile noting the following points:
- Hybrid barley varieties, such as Quadra, offer superior autumn vigour and increased rooting ability.
- Hybrid barley offers growers a chance to drill winter barley later in the season and achieve high yields.
- Seedtech have stocks of Quadra Hybrid Barley (Highest yielding winter barley on DAFM List 2017) to meet demands, Volume is very limited.
- Both come in 5 ha packs and convenient 1 acre packs with Redigo Deter seed dressing giving effective and labour saving BYDV control for 6-8 weeks post drilling.
The Seedtech suggested seed rates for Quadra are as follows and are backed up by an extensive set of experiments.
Suggested Seed Rates
Late Sept to Mid-October - 200 seeds/m2
Mid to Late October - 220 seeds/m2
November - 240 seeds/m2
The seed rate experiments on the graph above confirm that the suggested seed rates for Hybrids are robust and that hybrids have an exceptional ability to compensate where plant counts may be reduced.
