Abundant Produce launches new Lebanese cucumber varieties: Ultimo and Jyndy

Australia
October 4, 2016

  • Abundant Produce commences selling Ultimo (spring, summer) and Jyndy (autumn, winter) cucumber varieties to Australian farmers;
  • Multi-year development program yields strong cucumber varieties with summer varieties   producing on average four fruits per node, profitable early yield and strong disease with high quality saleable product;

Abundant Produce Ltd (ASX: ABT, “the Company”), Australia’s only listed plant breeding company, is pleased to release two new hybrid cucumber varieties for sale to Australian and international growers.

Stemming from a multi-year development program supported by the University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute, Abundant Produce will commence selling in Australia the new summer/spring variety - Ultimo, and new autumn /winter variety - Jyndy, to growers and to the serious home gardeners via the Company’s website.

Results of the Company’s breeding program indicate that both hybrid varieties will produce superior cucumber plants with yields higher than that currently available on the market.

Breeding cucumbers in harsh Australian conditions enables Abundant Produce to naturally select lines with strong tolerances. This means the Company’s Ultimo and Jyndy hybrid Lebanese cucumber varieties will offer growers higher harvestable yield potential and better fruit quality.

Nabil Ahmad, Abundant Scientific Officer, said:

“For cucumber growers, yield is paramount and early yield is more profitable. We have chosen to release the Ultimo and Jyndy varieties because of their strong potential to provide high early yield while also optimising fruit quality. The Abundant Produce development team is excited to release two world leading high yielding commercial Lebanese cucumber varieties.”

Graham Brown, Abundant Produce Research Director, said:

“As a pure development house of vegetable plant intellectual property, we are more concerned with making the best vegetable plant and not further sales of insecticides and fertilisers.

“Our tight focus on strong vegetable plants with low growing costs has yielded two varieties, Ultimo and Jyndy, which we are very excited to bring to market. We look forward to delivering great outcomes for farmers with these products in the immediate term and a robust pipeline of new lines in the years ahead.”

The Company anticipates that revenue from direct Australian sales of commercial plant seed varieties will commence to contribute to operational cash flow in the current financial year. A leading global distributor is currently completing their trials of a number of Abundant’s cucumbers for international sales.
