On the 7th of October the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament will celebrate the International Year of Pulses with a meeting, organised in collaboration with Italian research institutions, entitled "The International Year of Pulses: research and policies for sustainable agriculture and food security". The FAO, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of Agriculture, as well as ESA, will be on the agenda.
This meeting will present development and research initiatives on pulses at a national and international level, with special reference to the research project BEAN_ADAPT, coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Marche, aimed at identifying the genes in common bean that are responsible for adaptation to new environments.
BEAN_ADAPT proposes to make available technologies and germplasm directly to seed companies and farmers, so as to implement efficient plant breeding programmes and contribute to a multilateral system to access and share in the benefits deriving from research and the use of genetic resources.
The International Year of Pulses (#IYP2016) aims to raise awareness on the nutritional benefits of legumes in the context of a sustainable food production and food and nutrition security. This year presents a unique opportunity to encourage connections within the food chain (food chain) in order to make better use of legume proteins, expand global production, better use of crop rotation and face the challenges of legumes trade.
