United Kingdom - Looking for a low risk winter wheat variety? DSV’s new hard feed wheat Marston could be the answer for you

United Kingdom
September 26, 2016

The AHDB Recommended Lists can sometimes get overwhelming - with 55 winter wheat varieties, either recommended or a candidate. Selecting the right variety for your farming situation from such a long list can be daunting!

DSV’s new hard feed wheat could be the answer for you!

With disease pressure on the up and a continuous reduction in chemistry to use on crops, Marston has entered the market at the right time with its excellent disease resistance, especially for yellow rust and Septoria tritici. There are only a handful of varieties available that have scores of 9 for yellow rust and more than 6.5 for Septoria tritici. Marston is one of them, with a score of 6.8 for Septoria tritici.

In addition, there are only two varieties that have less than 1% lodging (treated), these are Crusoe, the group 1 variety, and Marston. Harvest can be that little easier with a stiff-strawed variety that has the same maturity as farmer-favourite, JB Diego.

Marston is a consistent variety with easy disease management, which is highlighted with a good untreated yield of 110% of controls (JB Diego 101%, Skyfall 108%). In the first wheat slot Marston out-yields Leeds and JB Diego whilst maintaining its high specific weight and HFN.

Marston is commercially available to purchase through all good seed merchants including Agrii, Gleadell Agricultural Ltd, Hubbard Seeds and Wynnstay.
