Only Dow AgroSciences' Enlist technology provides tolerance to three key herbicides in soybeans - Growers will benefit from three postemergence weed control options in cotton, too

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
July 13, 2016

Using Enlist Duo® herbicide and glufosinate postemergence along with a residual preemergence herbicide will provide an unparalleled program approach to weed control in Enlist E3™ soybeans, Enlist™ soybeans and Enlist cotton. Enlist Duo is not yet registered for use on Enlist cotton.

The herbicide applications have been made, and growers are busy scouting their soybean and cotton fields to see if weeds are making an unwanted appearance. With recently confirmed resistance of pigweed to PPO herbicides and with few other postemergence herbicide options available to control tough and resistant weeds, growers may be asking themselves what they can use to keep weeds at bay.

The Enlist™ weed control system will give growers the ability to use three modes of action postemergence in both soybeans and cotton. It is the most advanced herbicide trait technology available to growers.

Three modes of action for unmatched weed control
Enlist soybeans and Enlist cotton offer tolerance to Enlist Duo® herbicide, which is a combination of new 2,4-D choline and glyphosate. Enlist Duo herbicide helps control the toughest weeds, including Palmer amaranth, marestail and giant ragweed. Enlist Duo is not yet registered for use on Enlist cotton.

In addition, Enlist soybeans and Enlist™ cotton offer a third weed control option by providing full tolerance to glufosinate. That means only in fields of Enlist soybeans and Enlist cotton (pending regulatory approval of Enlist Duo on Enlist cotton) will growers have the option of using three different modes of action to which the crop is tolerant to manage hard-to-control and resistant weeds.

“No other soybean and cotton technology offers tolerance to these three important herbicides for postemergence weed control,” says Jonathan Siebert, Ph.D., Enlist field sales leader. “Glufosinate is an effective mode of action on tough weeds, and with Enlist soybeans and Enlist cotton, it could be a key component of growers’ postemergence weed control programs.”

Enlist E3™ soybeans, Enlist™ soybeans and Enlist cotton offer tolerance to Enlist Duo® herbicide — a combination of new 2,4-D choline and glyphosate — as well as full tolerance to glufosinate. Enlist Duo is not yet registered for use on Enlist cotton.

This combination of postemergence herbicides coupled with a residual preemergence herbicide provides growers an unparalleled program approach to weed control.

Dow AgroSciences will offer two soybean options to growers: Enlist E3™ soybeans and Enlist™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans. Enlist cotton is stacked with Genuity® Roundup Ready® Flex and WideStrike® 3 Insect Protection.

With the Enlist system, growers can make variety choices based on product fit to optimize yield knowing they have an elite trait package to provide control of weed and insect pests.

“Having glufosinate tolerance with Enlist cotton gives us another mode of action within our weed management plan,” says Georgia grower Jonathan Mann, who planted PhytoGen® cottonseed with the Enlist trait this season. “We need to use multiple modes of action to control the unrelenting pigweed in our fields.”

Wide application window to beat weather challenges
Each season has its challenges, and Mother Nature often can interfere with the ideal time for growers to make postemergence applications. In addition to essential weed control, both glufosinate and Enlist Duo have wide application windows in Enlist™ soybeans and in Enlist cotton, once Enlist Duo® herbicide is registered for use in Enlist cotton.

Glufosinate can be applied up to R1 or beginning bloom in Enlist soybeans and up to early bloom in Enlist cotton. Enlist Duo can be applied up to R2 in Enlist™ soybeans and, pending regulatory approval, up to midbloom in Enlist cotton.

Tools to ensure long-term use
Knowing that herbicide options are limited, growers must use the products available in a way that prolongs and protects their efficacy. To sustain the technology, growers should use Enlist Duo as part of a program approach that starts with applying a preemergence residual herbicide. Using a program approach limits the development of resistant weeds.

The Enlist system helps growers ensure the technology is available now and in the future. With the Enlist Ahead management resource, growers have access to the Enlist Ahead app, Enlist™ field specialists and other tools and training with Enlist Ahead. These resources help growers determine the best weed management program for their farms.

Growers throughout the Midwest and South continue to face more hard-to-control and resistant weeds. The use of multiple modes of action will help manage and prevent further weed resistance.

“The flexibility to use three different modes of action in postemergence applications gives growers more options for their weed management plans,” Siebert says. “Enlist Duo herbicide can control tough weeds in Enlist soybeans and, once registered, Enlist cotton while protecting yield.”
