Australia - Grants program continues to reward sustainable cotton farming

Australia
May 6, 2016

Cotton growers who receive myBMP certification this year will again be eligible for a $2,000 grant (ex GST) grant under the Better Farming Brighter Future sustainable cotton farming initiative.

Supported by Cotton Australia and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) the Better Farming Brighter Future grants are available to all cotton farmers who undertake an audit and successfully complete myBMP certification of their operation during the 2016 calendar year.

“We’re pleased to offer these grants for the third consecutive season as a way to help encourage growers to undertake myBMP certification,” said Monsanto Australia Managing Director, Tony May.

“Monsanto is committed to helping farmers continue to produce high quality crops with fewer resources and the myBMP program supports this objective.

“Aussie cotton growers are among the most innovative farmers in Australia, and already leaders in the adoption of new technology and implementing best practice. Monsanto is happy to continue the Better Farming Brighter Future grants program as our way of acknowledging these achievements and supporting continual improvement in cotton farming,” Mr May said.

Cotton Australia Chief Executive, Adam Kay, said the Better Farming Brighter Future grants have made myBMP certification more attractive to growers. More than 70 per cent of Australian cotton farms are now involved in myBMP, and the number of farms achieving certification has been increasing every year as growers start to recognise the benefits.

“myBMP is an essential tool for Aussie cotton growers. It helps ensure Australia is internationally recognised as a producer of the world’s best cotton, using responsible and efficient management practices,” Mr Kay said.

“Growers gain a great deal by using myBMP, which helps improve the efficiency of water use, pesticide management and other important inputs. myBMP also contributes to the overall health of the industry by helping every grower to maintain essential standard.

“The Better Farming Brighter Future grants acknowledge the hard work of farmers that complete myBMP certification, and recognise the contribution certified growers make to the improvement of the industry’s sustainability credentials.

“Cotton Australia encourages all cotton growers considering undertaking myBMP certification to take up the offer of this valuable grant,” Mr Kay said.
