After an amazing evening on last Tuesday, where the Hazera Onion Study Tour took the Aerial Tramway in Palm Springs and enjoyed the view, the group continued the tour to the California’s Imperial Valley on Wednesday.
The group saw onion harvesting in process and there was plenty of time to exchange information on many cultivation aspects like drip irrigation, harvesting methods and others. Later that day the focus was on organic onion production.
On Thursday morning the onion study tour visited Hazera’s short day onion Research & Development field. Hazeras short day onion breeder Pablo Salgado explained the ins and outs of the breeding process. From there they continued their journey to San Diego, where lunch was served. After lunch the group shared a very interesting presentation on how agriculture is dealing with water issues in California. Onion marketing, consumer trends and the USA onion market were discussed during a presentation by the National Onion Association (NOA). And Hazera’s Product manager Ben de Nijs gave a detailed presentation on onions in the world, global expectations on consumption, production and challenges, and on how Hazera prepares to be ready for what is coming.
