In an exciting move the University of Tasmania has launched a new agriculture degree to meet the growing demand for agribusiness focussed graduates.
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture and Business) combines agricultural science and business into a new integrated degree.
Agriculture Undergraduate Degree Coordinator, Dr Tina Acuna said the degree has been designed with employers in mind.
“It was very important that we created a degree that can help address the current skills shortage, where there are an estimated four jobs for every agriculture graduate,” Dr Acuna said.
“Graduates will come out with strong business acumen, the skillset to run their own business, manage agricultural enterprises and provide advice to industry.
“The combination of these two areas is a contemporary approach that will provide a degree perfectly suited to inspiring entrepreneurs in agriculture”.
Young entrepreneur, Henry Terry from Deloraine will be graduating from the University of Tasmania on Tuesday this week.
Henry is the owner of successful small business Tasmanian Truffles and says his degree in agriculture helped him get to where he is today.
“The degree really helped me question my techniques and get a better understanding of how and why I am doing things on the farm.” Henry said.
“There are so many things involved in getting even a little business like mine started up. You need a whole range of skills and the business side of it is every bit as important as actually producing the truffles.
“It gives you the confidence to know what you are doing, in terms of the big picture.”
Students studying in the area of agriculture receive generous support through industry and privately funded scholarships and agriculture has the highest number of scholarships available at the University.
In 2016 more than $300,000 in scholarships will support 42 students. Although applications for University of Tasmania scholarships have closed, applications for the Australian Government’s Horizon Scholarship are now open to first-year university students.
Applications are open for the new degree. Aspiring entrepreneurs can find out more at: www.utas.edu.au/agriculture-and-business
