China set to achieve 100 million mu super rice planting

Beijing, China
May 13, 2010

This year will witness a speed-up of the expansion of super rice. The goal is to achieve 100 million mu (about 6.67million hectares) planting area, playing an important role in safeguarding China’s food security. A CCTV jounalist has reported the news from the national meeting on super rice in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.

Host: what is the focus of this year’s expansion of super rice?

Journalist: agricultural authorities at all levels should base on 80 varieties of super rice approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, choose major varieties according to local conditions, and achieve the goal of disseminating super rice planting up to 100 million mu, and yield increase of 50 kg and cutting the cost and increase income of 100 yuan per mu.

Host: according to your understanding, are there any difficulties during the expansion of super rice?

Journalist: first, we should clarify a concept: by “super rice”, we refer to the super high-yielding rice. Now we have altogether 80 varieties. But the high-yielding varieties alone can not insure high yield; we have to support them with a series of technologies in cultivation.

Currently, China takes the lead in cultivation of super rice in the world. The Ministry of Agriculture would like also to achieve the goal of increasing the yield by 50 kg and boosting farmers’ income by 100 yuan per mu this year.
