Northern Ireland - Get ready for autumn reseeding with Co. Offaly demo

United Kingdom
July 31, 2015

Grassland reseeding is expensive, but done correctly, Teagasc has shown that the cost can be recovered within 2 years. Germinal in conjunction with Teagasc are holding a reseeding demo on the farm of Dan Bracken, Mountbolus, Tullamore, Co. Offaly on Thursday 13th August at 6.30 pm. The event will discuss reseeding, soil fertility, variety choice and weed control, with a machinery demo also taking place. Grassland reseeding will increase the quantity and quality of grass you grow on your farm. New leys are 25% more responsive to nitrogen fertiliser than old swards. There are a number of key steps that you must take to ensure a successful reseed is established, including building soil fertility and correcting soil pH. Choose grass varieties and an establishment method that best suits your farm. Finally and often overlooked is the correct selection of a post emergence spray to eliminate problem weeds. Good grazing management will improve tillering and sward quality for many years to come.

Farmers and contractors have a range of machines and methods to choose from for grassland reseeding. Failing to select the most suitable method can lead to disappointing results. Ploughing to reseed is probably the most ‘fail-safe’ method and provides an opportunity to level the field or improve land drainage. Ploughing allows for the establishment of a fine firm seedbed, greater soil to seed contact and more available moisture for seed germination. Minimum cultivation is an ideal method where ground contains a lot of stone or where rock is near the surface. As there is minimum ground disturbance, a return to grazing is possible within 60 days in ideal conditions. Minimum cultivation is generally cheaper than ploughing and the most fertile soil remains at the surface where nutrients are needed. Use of a heavy disc harrow on uncultivated ground can provide a good ‘half-way house’ between both. At the event farmers can view a range of reseeding methods in our live machinery demonstration including the Guttler, Vredo, Einbock seeder, powerharrow / fiona grass box and the one-pass system. The event site is near Mountbolus village off the N52 road and will be signposted on the day.
