April 9-the kick-off ceremony of the establishment of National Summer Breeding Base for Wheat and Oil Seed Rape in Yunnan Province, the R&D Demonstration Base of Modern Agriculture of Kunming City, the Research Base of Yunnan Agricultural University and Xundian Start-up Business Park for Taiwanese Farmers in Shilin was held in Xundian County of Yunnan Province.
According to the President of Yunnan Agricultural University, the project, receiving over 25 million yuan of investment from the state, provincial and municipal governments, seeks to make use of the Province’s advantage in climate condition to build a national summer breeding base, so as to: first, use the unique local climate condition to establish the national summer breeding base for the out-of-season growth of wheat, oil seed rape and potato; second, assist the development of Kunming’s modern agriculture to increase farmers’ income through seed production, and; third, to provide a platform of practice for students of the Yunnan Agricultural University.
To build such a base requires high latitude and lower temperature, which is the advantage of Xundian County. Success has been achieved in previous tests: the vitality of oil seed rape bred in summer is stronger, and multiple planting cycles can be realized with the summer farming between June and late September.
