Committed to fulfilling its mission of “Science For A Better Life,” Bayer CropScience unveiled the “Leave a Better World” sculpture at the National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame’s 50th Anniversary grand reopening on Saturday, April 18. During the Farm Progress Show 2014, Bayer CropScience created the sculpture out of recycled materials, with the artists’ progress on the sculpture displayed on site throughout the tradeshow. The sculpture was donated in full to the National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame, where it will reside permanently.
Artists Amandine Drouet, Dena Light Peake, Ruth Standford and Mike Wsol, volunteered their time to create and install the sculpture, made entirely from recycled materials. Structured as an iconic raftered roof barn, the sculpture signifies the company’s strong commitment to sustainability and dedication to the values of American agriculture in both business and academia.
Created by a rare federal charter signed in 1960 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame is largely funded by private and corporate donations. After closing during the 2014 season for renovations, grand reopening event featured remarks from the museum’s board of directors, Bonner Springs Mayor Jeff Harrington and Edwardsville Mayor John McTagart. Additional activities included a Barnyard Babies live animal exhibit, live observational bee hives and seed packet giveaway supporting the Bayer CropScience Feed A Bee initiative to help increase forage areas for bees.
“We are so excited that Bayer selected the National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame as the new location for the ‘Leave a Better World’ sculpture,” said Dawn Gabel, museum director. “This impressive work of art is sure to inspire our visitors to think about the relationship between agriculture and sustainability and what we can do to improve the world for our future generations."
About The National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame
The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, or the Ag Center as it is more commonly known, became a reality when it was issued a federal charter by an act of the 86th Congress and signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 31, 1960. This rare federal charter, an historic beginning the institution shares with organizations like the American Red Cross, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Future Farmers of America, charged the Ag Center to serve as the "national" museum of agriculture and a memorial to farming leaders. Although the museum was created by federal action, it receives no appropriation from local, state, or federal government. The Center is entirely funded by private and corporate donations, and revenue generated by admissions, memberships, special events, and facility rental.
