First in a series of BASF top grower profiles

BASF Canada recognizes Barry Chappell, a Manitoba grower, for his commitment to agriculture through the first in a series of grower profiles.

Barry Chappell owns and operates Chappell Ag Ventures in Hamiota, Manitoba. The company's goal is to offer a complete range of products and services for local growers by providing custom seed treating and selling foliar nutrients and chemistry.

Chappell, a third generation farmer, grows 3000 acres of oilseeds and grains, primarily for seed with his wife and three children. With his experience as a grower and 12 years as a Pioneer Hi-Bred sales representative, he knows the challenges growers in his area face and understands what they need to do to run a successful farming operation.

Chappell has seen tighter canola rotations and increased weed pressure; as a result the risk of herbicide resistance is greater. He recommends growers use multiple herbicide systems in their operations to help manage weed resistance and disease.

"In this area, most producers are on a two-year rotation with canola," said Chappell. "Producers now have to look at rotating herbicide technologies and systems to help control volunteers and work on controlling weed resistance."

"We recommend that our customers use multiple systems," added Chappell. "We want to promote what's best for the future of their operation. Rotating between three systems is important for the future of their operations and for Canadian agriculture."

Chappell also understands that constant change is part of the agricultural industry and recognizes the importance of adapting your operation. BASF is committed to research and investing in solutions with the chemistries and products that will help meet those changing needs.
