A long time contributor to, and advocate of, Canada’s seed sector: Lorne Hadley has been awarded with the Canadian Seed Trade Association’s Seed Achievement Award.
The CSTA Seed Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Canadian seed industry in the private or public sector. According to his nominator: Brent Derkatch of Canterra Seeds: “Lorne’s commitment to advancing the interests of Canadian plant breeders and his tireless work to ensure that breeders are rewarded for their work, more than qualifies him for this award.”
A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Lorne Hadley has spent most of his career in the seed industry, beginning with the Canadian Seed Coaters; with UGG Proven Seed and now as the Executive Director of the Canadian Plant Technology Agency (CPTA), and owner of AgGenuity Consulting.
In his letter of nomination Mr. Derkatch said: “Over his more years with the CPTA, Lorne has been a sort of ‘IP PI’, working with determination to uncover those who violate intellectual property laws. However, he is not just an investigator, he is an educator. Lorne has travelled Canada speaking to businesses and farmers about intellectual property protection and carefully explaining what constitutes on‐compliance, and identifying the consequences of non‐compliance.”
In addition to his work with the CPTA, Lorne has contributed strongly to the Canadian Seed Trade Association: as the main contributor to the CSTA Intellectual Property Text Book; and as the co‐author of a major project to determine the economic contribution of the Canadian Seed industry.
Lorne Hadley received his award during the CSTA’s 91st Annual Meeting in Banff Alberta.
