Australia - $2,000 grants to recognise cotton farming excellence

Australia
August 5, 2014

Australian cotton farmers’ excellence in farm management and sustainability is to be recognised through a new $2,000 Monsanto Australia grant.

The industry’s continual innovation in farm management practices has enabled cotton farmers to produce high quality crops using fewer natural resources.

This impressive record is being recognised by the industry’s myBMP initiative, a voluntary farm and environmental management system that encourages the continual improvement of cotton farming. The initiative is being run by Cotton Australia with support from the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC).

The $2,000 Monsanto Australia grants are being offered to help more growers achieve myBMP certification and to promote the industry’s commitment to productive and sustainable farming practices.

Monsanto Australia’s Managing Director, Daniel Kruithoff, said the company was committed to maintaining the cotton industry’s leadership in the responsible and efficient use of resources.

“Australia’s cotton farmers are recognised as some of the most innovative in Australian agriculture thanks to their adoption of new technology and best management practices.

myBMP showcases cotton farmers’ productivity and environmental progress and encourages them to identify areas they can improve their performance.

“Monsanto Australia is dedicated to developing solutions to help make agriculture more sustainable which is why we are proud to support the myBMP program,” Ms McLean said.

Cotton Australia and CRDC are strongly encouraging growers to take up the offer of a grant to complete their myBMP certification.

Cotton Australia CEO, Adam Kay, says: “Lifting grower engagement with myBMP is a key priority area for the industry, and any initiative to help growers engage with myBMP is appreciated. The growth in participation to date demonstrates increased grower and industry-wide recognition of the benefits of the system.”

CRDC Executive Director Bruce Finney says: “myBMP is about adopting and recording best practices on our cotton farms, so that we can demonstrate continuous improvements in farm management, performance and sustainability as an industry. Importantly, the system is underpinned by the best possible cotton research and development, so you can rest assured that it’s good for your farm – and now, good for your back pocket as well.”

Each aspect of the myBMP program showcases the Australian cotton industry’s ability to manage and self-regulate, which is reinforced by continued grower participation and certification in myBMP.

The program assesses on-farm practices ranging from biosecurity and workplace health and safety to soil health.

The $2000 (ex-GST) Monsanto Australia grants will help growers achieve myBMP certification and are available to all cotton farmers who undertake an audit and complete the certification of their operation before 30 November 2014.

Grants will be reimbursed following confirmation that myBMP certification has been achieved.
