New 'Focus on Soybean' webcasts cover water stress management, field rolling

It’s no secret that good agronomic practices early in the season can significantly increase soybean crop health, harvest efficiency, and yields later on. Two of the latest ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcasts provide soybean growers and their consultants some agronomic tips and knowledge to do just that.
“Agronomic Tools for Managing Water Stress” by Dr. James E. Specht, Professor in the Department of Agronomy & Horticulture at the University of Nebraska, breaks down the water needs for soybean crops, water’s effect on soybean physiology, and strategies for reducing stresses due to lack of water. In this talk, Dr. Specht covers three main agronomic practices:
· Irrigation
· No-Till
· Early Planting
By the end of this presentation, growers, consultants, and other practitioners should better understand water stress in soybeans and the agronomic tools at hand for managing it.
“Soybean Field Rolling” by Greg Endres, Extension Area Agronomist for North Dakota State University, teaches consultants, growers, and other practitioners in the northern Great Plains the pros, cons, and procedures for field rolling, which is best performed early in the season to minimize crop damage.
Field rolling breaks down soil clods, pushes rocks below the surface, and levels the soil. This can increase a grower’s harvest efficiency by minimizing equipment damage, producing cleaner beans, and increasing the number of acres harvested per day.
The practice also has costs, including the roller, gas, and potential crop damage.
By the end of this presentation, viewers can more accurately weigh the pros, cons, and challenges of field rolling for soybean production in their fields.
