The LSU AgCenter has been evaluating landscape performance of columbines the past five years and selected the Swan series as a Louisiana Super Plant in fall 2011.
The Swan series is propagated by seed. Many of us know columbine (Aquilegia), but the Swan series offer flower colors in these great plants that are unfamiliar to most of us. You can now find many flower colors besides the yellow or golden columbines from Texas. Varieties in the Swan series are Blue White, Burgundy White, Pink Yellow, Red White, Rose White, Violet White, White and Yellow.
Columbine is a perennial, normally treated as an annual in Louisiana. For the landscape, plant it in color beds mid- to late fall for eight weeks of flowers in March through early to mid-May.
