Naktuinbouws' Head of Department Variety Testing, Mr. Kees van Ettekoven, is elected vice Chairman of the Technical Committee of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The election was held during the UPOV forty-seventh ordinary session of the UPOV Council on October 24, 2013. Mr. Van Ettekoven has been appointed by the Council for a period of three years, and he shall act together with the also appointed Chairman (Mr. Alejandro Barrientos-Priego (Mexico) on behalf of the Committee in coordinating the work of the Technical Working Parties and ensuring that this work proceeds in accordance with policy decisions of the Council.

Tasks
Other tasks of the Committee are, amongst other things, to review the technical documents prepared by the Working Parties and to ensure that they are generally based on the same philosophy and that any differences represent real technical differences in the requirements of different species. The committee also reviews proposals from the Technical Working Parties and presents –after approval by it, the technical documents and proposals from the Technical Working Parties to the Council.;

The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is an intergovernmental organization with headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland). UPOV's mission is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society.
