HGCA Recommended Lists are run by Crop Evaluation Ltd, an independent company owned by HGCA and managed by all stakeholders involved in the Lists. Varieties are added to the Lists when they are considered to have the potential to provide a consistent economic benefit to the whole industry.
Fifteen varieties have been added to the HGCA Recommended Lists for 2010/11.
Wheat
There are six new wheat varieties.
KWS Sterling and Kingdom are nabim Group 2 varieties. KWS Sterling is a UK recommendation while Kingdom has a regional recommendation for the East and West Regions. Invicta and Warrior are new nabim Group 3 varieties. Invicta has a UK recommendation while Warrior gains a specific recommendation because of its very good disease resistance. Beluga is a soft milling Group 4 variety and Conqueror is a hard milling Group 4.
Seven varieties have been removed from the List including Consort after 17 years on the List, and Malacca which was once the most widely grown nabim Group 1 milling wheat. There are no changes to the spring wheat Recommended List.
Barley
Three new winter barleys have been added. Winsome and Purdy are potential malting varieties while KWS Cassia is a two-row feed. Winsome and KWS Cassia gain full UK recommendation, and Purdy is recommended for the East and for growers who require soil-borne mosaic virus resistance.
Three winter barleys have been removed from the List - Amarena, Bronx and Camion.
There are two new spring barley varieties, Propino a potential malting type and Garner a feed type. Cellar, Rebecca and Riviera have been removed from the List.
Oilseed Rape
The two new winter oilseed rape varieties are both conventional, open pollinated types - DK Cabernet and Fashion. Both are recommended for the East and West Region.
There have been several trial failures in recent years for oilseed rape in the North region so it has not been possible to make any new recommendations. Four varieties, Compass, Fashion, Krypton and PR45D05, have been re-sown into Recommended List trials and will be considered for recommendation in 2010. Two winter oilseed rape varieties have been removed from the List - NK Victory (North) and Toccata (UK).
Oats
Two new winter oat varieties have been recommended - Balado, a conventional husked type and Fusion, a naked type. Expression has been removed from the List.
The only change to the spring oat List is the removal of Winston but two varieties, Canyon and Rozmar have progressed into second year Recommended List trials and will be considered for recommendation in 2010.
Summaries of the new HGCA Recommended Lists can be found on the HGCA website www.hgca.com in the varieties section. The full HGCA Recommended Lists booklet will be distributed in early 2010.
