European plant breeder, Saaten Union, have appointed Elsoms Seeds Ltd. as their marketing agent for the UK. Wolfgang Glaser, Saaten Union Commercial Director, commented, “as an independent plant breeder with a strong commercial, marketing and technical team, Elsoms are the ideal partner to work alongside our UK Technical Director , Dr Richard Jennaway, and his team at our Research Station at Cowlinge near Newmarket.”

Saaten-Union GmbH was founded in 1965 and is an association of seven medium-sized plant-breeding enterprises, P.H. Petersen Saatzucht, Norddeutsche Pflanzenzucht Hans Georg Lembke, Strube Research, Nordsaat Saatzuchtgesellschaft, W.v. Borries-Eckendorf, Ackermann Saatzucht and Dr Hans Rolf Späth Saatzucht. The company has one of the biggest and most advanced biotechnology laboratories for plant breeding in Germany and has eight subsidiaries, one each in Great Britain, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine. In the Saaten-Union group there are 780 employees across Europe, 70 of whom work at the company headquarters in Isernhagen, Germany.
“We are delighted to be selected by Saaten Union to market their varieties in the UK,” announced Roger Keeling, Elsoms Chairman. “Saaten Union have developed a strong team at Cowlinge and during the summer, our Agricultural Director, Bob Miles, and Sales Manager, Adrian Hayler, have been working closely with them marketing the hybrid rye variety, SU Drive. We look forward to working with Richard Jennaway and the Saaten Union team in successfully developing their varieties for the UK market, including hybrid and conventional wheat and rye, as well, barley, oats, triticale, maize and catch crops.
The appointment by Saaten Union continues the resurgence of Elsoms agricultural business, closely following the successful launch of Trinity Oilseed Rape, bred in conjunction with Florimond Desprez and SW Lantmannen, as well as the recent announcement of the formation of Elsoms Wheat Limited, a joint venture between Nordsaat, Saaten Union Recherche and Elsoms Seeds Ltd.
