Harris Moran Seed Company opens pumpkin fields to local schoolchildren for 11th annual community outreach event

Modesto, California, USA
October 2, 2013

Modesto Elementary students invited to learn “The Lifecycle of a Pumpkin” on daily tours running through the end of October

Harris Moran, a worldwide leader in vegetable seeds, and a member of the HM.CLAUSE Business Unit of Limagrain, today announced the opening of its yearly pumpkin themed community outreach program. The event, aimed at Modesto area elementary and special education students, provides an opportunity to tour a real, working pumpkin field and learn about “The Lifecycle of a Pumpkin”. In addition, they will also have the chance to interact with local community leaders, and receive their own pumpkin to take home to their families.

“Harris Moran is committed to serving the communities we work in and doing our part to help educate the youth on the importance of sustainable food production,” said HM.CLAUSE VP of Corporate Communications, Carole Cuffy. “This is a great way for us to engage our local community and educate our children about agriculture in a unique way. As a company, we are always looking for ways to have our employees participate and be instigators of local initiatives, and I want to thank all the volunteers from Harris Moran who have contributed by dedicating their time and energy to making this Pumpkin event a success.”

Introduced eleven years ago, the Harris Moran Pumpkin patch tour has educated thousands of children in Modesto and the surrounding community. In 2012 alone, the program hosted over 2100 students from all over the central valley including Ceres, Modesto, Empire, Hughson, Riverbank, Hickman and Waterford. The program is an outstanding way to help young students appreciate the importance of agriculture in a unique and entertaining way. As part of the trip, students get a chance to learn about where seeds come from, their importance in the global food ecosystem, how vegetables are grown from them, and, finally, how this food ends up on grocery store shelves.

This year’s festivities have already kicked off and will run through October 31. To make reservations for your K-1, or Special Education classes for 2014, please contact Sherry Horton at 209-549-5281.
