As the OSR drilling season enters its last week Elsoms Seeds have seen a surge of late orders, according to Bob Miles, Elsoms Agricultural Seeds Director. “With many growers waiting until the last minute to finally decide on how much OSR to grow for harvest 2014, it appears from the surge of orders last week and over the weekend that many have decided to choose Trinity,” commented Bob. “We have had a busy weekend responding to requests from merchants to process more seed to meet orders for delivery this week. A season that took a long time to get going is certainly finishing with a flourish and this makes us very optimistic for Trinity’s position in the market for next year.” he added.
Trinity was launched in early summer this year at Cambridge University and at Cereals 2013. With the last few HGCA trial results now in, Trinity has produced the highest gross output figure for 2013 at 108% of control for the East/West region. “Trinity certainly seems to have found favour with growers across the country,” said Elsoms Sales Manager, Adrian Hayler. “Farmers and merchants are really attracted by the fact that it has a strong all round package combining excellent agronomic characters, robust resistance to disease, a vigorous growth habit and obviously a stunning yield,” commented Adrian
“Farmers certainly seem to be making their own minds up as to what type of OSR variety will provide them the best chance of a high output in practice” said Mark Nightingale, Elsoms Oilseed Rape Breeder. “A vigorous OP like Trinity gives growers a lot of flexibility and Trinity’s excellent early vigour makes it ideally suited for later drilled rape crops,” he added. “Compared to expensive Hybrids, OP’s like Trinity provide growers with the option of using higher seed rates to accommodate a range of establishment timings and methods” commented Mark.
Trinity is one the first varieties to become available to farmers from Elsoms joint breeding programme with Florimond Desprez of France and German/Swedish plant breeder SW Lantmannen. “We are really pleased with the progress our programme is making and unlike other breeders, who have effectively abandoned OP’s, we have continued developing OP’s alongside some impressive hybrid varieties in our breeding programme,” said Mark. “OP’s such as Trinity can provide growers with an equally high level of autumn growth and overall performance to hybrids. In a maritime climate, such as the UK, compared to that of northern and central Europe, OP’s can in practice provide farmers with a more reliable high output year on year” he concluded.
