New Triticale variety Kereon looks set grab a sizable share of the UK market according to Bob Miles, Elsoms Agricultural Seeds Director. “With the HGCA results now in and our seed crops harvested, we are delighted by Kereon’s performance,” said Bob. “We selected Kereon for its superior specific weight and good yield and with our seed crops coming in at 76kg/hl combined with a yield of 106% of control in HGCA trials it has certainly delivered on its potential !” he added.
Elsoms have seen a real upturn in demand for Triticale over the last week with their seed plant at Spalding Lincs working flat out to keep up with demand, according to Sales Manager, Adrian Hayler. “We had a lot of interest in Kereon at Cereals 2013 from growers who were attracted by the agronomic advantages of the crop but were also looking for a variety that would produce a good specific weight to improve the marketability of the harvested grain,” commented Adrian. “Since the HGCA results came out we have started to pick up some good orders for Kereon to add to the strong demand for established market favourite Tribeca,” he added.
“To get the message about Kereon’s grain quality across we have sent samples out to a range of customers and have received very positive feedback, “commented Bob Miles. “Kereon provides growers with a real advantage over older varieties such as Grenado and it would seem from the interest we are now getting that farmers and merchants are recognising this” concluded Bob.
Kereon is the latest in a long line of Triticale varieties that Elsoms have introduced into the UK market from the French Breeder Florimond Desprez’s extensive Triticale breeding programme in Northern France. “We select varieties that we feel will be suitable for the UK market and trial them at our plant breeding station in Lincolnshire as well as entering them into the HGCA’s descriptive list trials” said Adrian. “We are confident in Kereon’s ability as it is already being successfully commercially grown in Northern France” he added.
