Arcadia Biosciences, Inc., an agricultural technology company focused on developing technologies and products that benefit the environment and human health, and Vilmorin, the world’s fourth-largest seed company and the global leader in wheat genetics and seed, today announced that they have reached an agreement for the development and commercialization of Nitrogen Use Efficient (NUE) wheat. Under the terms of the agreement, Vilmorin receives privileged global rights to the use of Arcadia’s NUE technology in wheat. Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
The combination of Arcadia’s NUE technology and Vilmorin’s genetic resources enables the development of high-yielding wheat that could require about half the amount of nitrogen fertilizer as conventional crops, offering economic benefits to growers and a measurable positive impact on the environment.
With more than 220 million hectares cultivated globally, wheat is the world’s largest cultivated crop. It’s also the heaviest user of nitrogen fertilizer with 20 million tons applied annually, accounting for approximately 20 percent of total global nitrogen fertilizer use.

Arcadia Biosciences, Inc., société spécialisée dans le développement de technologies et de produits pour l’agriculture, plus respectueux de l'environnement et de la santé humaine, et Vilmorin, quatrième semencier mondial, acteur de premier plan dans le domaine du blé, annoncent aujourd'hui qu'elles ont conclu un accord portant sur le développement et la commercialisation de blé optimisant l’utilisation de l'azote. Cet accord octroie à Vilmorin, pour le blé, l’accès privilégié à la technologie d'utilisation de l’azote développée par Arcadia. Les modalités financières de l'accord n'ont pas été divulguées.
La combinaison de la technologie d'Arcadia et des ressources génétiques de Vilmorin permettra de développer du blé à haut rendement, nécessitant environ deux fois moins d'intrant azoté que des cultures conventionnelles, offrant ainsi des avantages économiques aux agriculteurs et contribuant à un plus grand respect de l'environnement.
Avec plus de 220 millions d'hectares, le blé est la première espèce cultivée au monde. Il s'agit aussi de la culture utilisant le plus d’apport en engrais azoté, avec 20 millions de tonnes par an,
soit environ 20% de l'utilisation mondiale de ce type d'intrants.
