U.S. National Agricultural Statistics Service updates 2009 small grains estimates
Washington, DC, USA
November 10, 2009
In the November 10 Crop Production report, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) published several changes to estimates made in the Small Grains 2009 Summary released Sept. 30.
In late October, NASS re-contacted producers in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming who had reported in September that they had not yet finished harvesting barley, oats, Durum wheat or other spring wheat. This enabled NASS to determine how many of the acres were actually harvested and to record the actual production from those acres. Based on the updated information, several changes were made to the estimates published in the Small Grains 2009 Summary. Because unharvested production is a component of on farm stocks, NASS also made changes to Sept. 1 on-farm stocks levels.
For Durum wheat, harvested area was reduced 30,000 acres in Montana and 60,000 acres in North Dakota. No acreage change was made in Idaho. Yields in Montana and North Dakota increased 1 bushel per acre, while Idaho increased 2 bushels per acre. U.S. Durum production is 109 million bushels, down 1 percent from the Small Grains 2009 Summary.
For other spring wheat, harvested area declined 100,000 acres in North Dakota but was unchanged in Idaho, Minnesota and Montana. Yield in Minnesota decreased 1 bushel per acre but increased 0.5 bushel in North Dakota. Yields in Idaho and Montana were unchanged. As a result of the changes in Minnesota and North Dakota, other spring wheat production in the United States is 584 million bushels, down less than 1 percent from the Small Grains 2009 Summary.
All wheat production in the United States is 2.22 billion bushels, down fractionally from the previous estimate.
For oats, harvested area was unchanged in all states. Yield decreased 1 bushel per acre in North Dakota and decreased 3 bushels in Wyoming. Yields were unchanged in Idaho, Minnesota and Montana. As a result of the changes in North Dakota and Wyoming, oat production in the United States is 93.1 million bushels, down slightly from the previous estimate.
For barley, harvested area in North Dakota was revised to 1.13 million acres, down 10,000 acres from the Sept. 30 summary. Harvested acres remain the same in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming. Yield decreased 1 bushel per acre in Minnesota but increased 1 bushel in Montana. Yields were unchanged in Idaho, North Dakota and Wyoming. Total U.S. barley production is estimated at 227 million bushels, slightly below the previous estimate.
