L’INRA, le CIRAD, AgroParisTech, Agrocampus Ouest, Montpellier SupAgro et l’ENV Toulouse sont les six membres fondateurs d’AGREENIUM, Consortium national pour l'agriculture, l'alimentation, la santé animale et l'environnement.

Ils constituent ainsi une organisation à la hauteur des défis mondiaux posés par les besoins nouveaux dans les domaines de l’agriculture, de l’alimentation, de la santé animale et de l’environnement.
A ce titre, quelques priorités ont d’ores et déjà été identifiées :

• Agir dans la zone Méditerranée. AGREENIUM contribue dès à présent à l’Atelier de réflexion prospective (ARP) « Partenariats-Recherche-Méditerranée » (PARME), qui définit les recherches prioritaires à développer dans les dix prochaines années pour la Méditerranée autour de 4 axes privilégiés : santé, agriculture et alimentation, énergie et eau, culture et civilisation. AGREENIUM proposera des modes opératoires pour faciliter les coopérations dans le domaine de la recherche, de la formation et du développement.
• Contribuer à la définition des orientations françaises en matière de recherche agronomique internationale. AGREENIUM a récemment livré sa contribution à la CRAI (commission interministérielle de la recherche agronomique internationale). AGREENIUM donne au dispositif français de recherche une configuration plus à même de développer des collaborations avec les établissements analogues à l’international en rapprochant recherche et enseignement supérieur. Le développement des capacités pour le Sud, l’aptitude à couvrir la chaîne de l’innovation, constituent un atout pour la contribution à la Recherche Agricole Internationale.
• Mettre en place un collège doctoral international. Il ne s’agirait pas de créer une école doctorale au sens strict, mais de construire des parcours mixtes associant les écoles doctorales existantes (France, Pays-Bas, Chine, Brésil) avec lesquelles les membres fondateurs d’AGREENIUM ont d’ores-et-déjà des accords. Ce dispositif, qui pourrait être opérationnel en 2011, serait un lieu mondial de formation dans les domaines de l’agriculture, de l’alimentation, de la santé animale et de l’environnement.

AGREENIUM est un établissement public de coopération scientifique (EPCS), créé par les ministres en charge de l’Agriculture, de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche et des Affaires étrangères, qui marquent ainsi leur volonté d’améliorer la performance du dispositif national de recherche et de formation dans les domaines précités, en vue de renforcer sa visibilité, son attractivité et ses capacités d’action à l’international, de constituer et de mobiliser de nouvelles compétences scientifiques autour de ces domaines.

AGREENIUM s’appuiera sur un comité d’orientation stratégique, largement ouvert à des personnalités françaises et étrangères. Il promouvra des actions et des programmes liant recherche formation et développement et représentera de manière regroupée l’offre française à l’international.

D’autres organismes et écoles pourront ultérieurement rejoindre AGREENIUM en tant que membres fondateurs ou associés. Cette dynamique de partenariat privilégié complète et renforce les alliances déjà conclues par les fondateurs avec les autres acteurs du système français de recherche et d’enseignement dans le cadre des PRES, ainsi qu’avec les autres organismes de recherche et les universités.

6 top agricultural research and educational institutions launch Agreenium

In forming AGREENIUM, the National Consortium for agriculture, food, animal health and the environment, founding members INRA, CIRAD, AgroParisTech, Agrocampus Ouest, Montpellier SupAgro and ENV Toulouse have forged an organisation that is more than capable of facing the global challenges imposed by new requirements in these four fields.

Several priority areas have already been singled out:

• Acting in the Mediterranean. AGREENIUM now participates in the Mediterranean Research Partnerships foresight discussion workshop (PARME ARP), which seeks to determine priority areas that ought to be the focus of research in the Mediterranean in the next ten years, with special emphasis on health, food and agriculture, water and energy, and culture and civilisation. AGREENIUM will suggest operating structures and ways of facilitating cooperation in research, training and development.
• Weighing in on France's approach to international agricultural research. AGREENIUM has recently submitted its contribution to the interministerial Commission de la Recherche Agronomique Internationale (CRAI), the international agricultural research commission. AGREENIUM provides the French research system with a structure that brings research and higher education closer together, thereby facilitating the development of collaborative partnerships with counterparts around the world. The development of capacities for the South and the ability to cover the innovation chain are a plus in France's contribution to international agricultural research.
• Establishing an international doctoral college. Rather than creating a doctoral school in the strict sense, this endeavour seeks to establish mixed programmes with existing doctoral schools (in France, the Netherlands, China and Brazil) that already have agreements with the founding members of AGREENIUM. This structure, which could be up and running in 2011, would serve as an international training centre in the fields of agriculture, food and nutrition, animal health and the environment.

AGREENIUM is a public scientific cooperation institution created by the Ministries for Agriculture, Higher Education and Research, and Foreign Affairs to demonstrate their desire to improve French research and training structures in their fields, increase France's visibility, appeal and international relevance, and help create and mobilise new scientific capabilities in these areas.

AGREENIUM is supported by a strategic planning committee that will be open to French and foreign scientists. It will promote programmes and actions combining research, training, and development, and represent France in the international arena.

Other institutions and schools may become full or associate partners of AGREENIUM. This special partnership complements and strengthens previously-formed alliances within the French research and education system in the framework of the French Centres for Research and Higher Education (PRES), as well as with other research bodies and universities.
