Syngenta Flowers has signed a contract with Royalty Administration International (RAI), the worldwide specialist in plant breeders’ rights and royalty monitoring. Under the contract, RAI will collect and monitor royalty payments from cutting producers, distributors and young plant raisers in Europe on Syngenta Flowers-bred varieties for pelargonium, poinsettia, chrysanthemum and bedding plants such as petunia and osteospermum.
RAI supervises that there is a fair, green sector and functions as a bridge between the grower and the breeder. It makes contracts with distributors and growers who produce their own cuttings and collects royalties for the breeder. It also advises breeders as well as distributors and growers how plant breeders' rights work and how they should be best applied.
“The agreement with RAI will help both us and our customers to protect against unethical competition from illegitimate use of flowers varieties for breeding and creates a sustainable environment for developing and proliferating new varieties”, said Eric Lekkerkerk, Head Syngenta Flowers for Europe, Africa and Middle East. “It also supports our strategy of partnering with professional distributors and offering them solutions to help create more value for their business.”
“We are representing the interests of more than 250 breeders and breeding companies worldwide and are looking very much forward to working with Syngenta Flowers and its customers. We undertake the administration of plant breeders' rights and plant patents enabling breeders, distributors and growers to concentrate fully on their specialization: developing new varieties, growing and distributing them”, said Maarten Leune, Director of Royalty Administration International.
Syngenta Flowers offers a wide range of top class genetics to the Flowers industry and has recently opened its wide range of pot and bedding flowers grown from cuttings to licensing partners. The company is known in the industry for its top-quality genetics and is constantly investing in the development of new, better, beautiful, stronger and healthier varieties to meet the different demands of consumers around the globe.
