March 29, 2012

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin signed a decree on the abolition of the voluntary labeling of foods that do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Moscow mayor's office acknowledged the decision to annulate the previous city administration decree on measures to ensure food safety and consumer information. This document from July 1, 2007 introduced voluntary labeling of foods that do not contain genetically modified organisms, with a "Does not contain GMO!" label. The permit to use the mark was given by the Department of Consumer Market and Services of the capital.

According to the document signed by Sobyanin today, the decision was made "in order to bring the legal acts of the Moscow government in compliance with federal legislation."
