The Conference on the Cooperation and Development of Winter Potato Industry was held in Nanning from February 28 to 29, 2012.

The conference was attended by representatives from China, Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Cambodia and other ASEAN countries. The participants include officials from ministries of agriculture and local governments, potato experts and scholars, and representatives of the potato industry.

Participants agreed at the conference to cooperate on the development of the winter potato production belt in southern China. By providing effective services that will facilitate new varieties, new technology and new equipments, the production belt will boost the scale and capacity of winter potato production in China, and thus creating a new force for the growth of the potato industry in China.

It was noted that southern provinces like Guangxi and Guangdong and northern potato producing provinces like Gansu and Inner Mongolia are highly complementary in terms of potato growing season, and accordingly there is great potential for cooperation between southern and northern provinces.

It is widely agreed at the conference that measures should be taken to encourage potato research institutes and businesses in northern provinces to carry out breeding, production technology research, processing and marketing activities in southern provinces, and thus promote the sound development of the potato sector both in northern and southern China.

Participants also noted that China and ASEAN countries also share high complementarities in terms of trade, and have great potential for cooperation. At the conference, a number of ways were identified for China-ASEAN future cooperation, including further development of information exchange platforms on potato production and marketing, organization of international agriculture exhibitions and trade fairs, and provision of necessary services for the investment and trade in the potato sector.
