Dr. Leah Brilman, Director of Research and Technical Services for Seed Research of Oregon, receives award from the Sports Turf Managers Association

On Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, Dr. Leah Brilman, Director of Research and Technical Services for Seed Research of Oregon, was presented with the prestigious Dr. William H. Daniel Award from the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA). Dr. Brilman was surprised with the honor during STMA’s Annual Awards Banquet, the culminating event of the 23rd Annual STMA Conference and Exhibition in Long Beach, California.
The Dr. William H. Daniel Award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the sports turf industry through his or her research, teaching or extension outreach. Dr. Brilman’s research has had a profound effect on the work of sports turf managers and will continue to do so. She has been a key driver of the STMA Student Challenge, presented by SAFE and Founding Partner Hunter Industries. Dr. Brilman has also presented worldwide innumerable times over her long career and has published a remarkable quantity of turfgrass-specific research.
Dr. Brilman has been with Seed Research of Oregon for 22 years. She has developed a long list of turfgrass varieties such as Grande II Tall Fescue and SR 4600 perennial ryegrass for sports field managers and golf course superintendents. In addition to her new variety introductions, education and science-based presentations have been a large part of Leah’s service and support to the industry. Her passion for the industry and her ability to address a range of topics from genetic research to pragmatic issues of maintaining sports turf are unique among her research peers. This award and the recognition it provides are appreciated and well deserved.
