Controlling sunflower rust

The National Sunflower Association (NAS) partially funded a research project with Dr. Sam Markell of NDSU and others on fungicide timing and control of red rust in sunflower. There were three research sites all in North Dakota. There were nine treatments including the untreated control.
Markell concluded that there was a "clear differentiation between the effectiveness of fungicides and the timing of applications".
There was a difference in the most effective timing between Qol fungicides like Headline® and Quadris® and the triazole family of fungicides which includes Folicur®.
The fungicides in the two classes do not work equally on sunflower rust. Markell concludes that in these trials "a single well-timed application of an effective fungicide was as effective at reducing sunflower rust as multiple applications."
