The Sclerotinia Initiative is now in its seventh year and researchers recently reported that progress in genetic tolerance is being made in most susceptible crops.
Wild sunflower is a potential gold mine for resistant genes. Researchers report head and stalk rot immunity in a number of wild sunflower species which have been in testing for six years. Literally hundreds of lines are now ready for seed production increase and field testing.
Commercial sunflower hybrids tested under heavy disease pressure are showing an increased tolerance. Fungicide research is also showing promise for controlling head rot. Some of the fungicides are experimental and remain unregistered.
The Sclerotinia Initiative is a federally funded competitive research program which includes soybeans, canola, edible beans, peas/lentils and sunflower.
