Grain growers deciding which crop varieties to grow next season can find guidance by accessing the latest National Variety Trials (NVT) results.
As the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported trials are harvested, 2011 results are being progressively uploaded on to the NVT website www.nvtonline.com.au
In 2011, 167 trials – relating to different grain crop types – were conducted in WA, including 44 wheat trials.
Among the crop varieties tested in WA this year were 36 commercially available wheat varieties, of which 29 were main season varieties and seven were durum wheats; 25 commercial barley varieties; 37 canola varieties; nine chickpea varieties; six field pea varieties; seven lupin varieties and seven oat varieties.
Across Australia, NVT tests commercial and non-commercial lines of wheat, barley, canola, triticale, oats, lupins, lentils, field peas, faba beans and chickpeas.
