Hundreds of onion growers from across the Treasure Valley and from as far as Spain gathered August 31 to preview the latest onion varieties at Parma-based seed company Nunhems USA’s annual Onion Showcase. As part of the event, the company honored advisors and students from four local high school Future Farmers of America clubs and announced donations of $1,000 to each of the programs.

The donations will allow the FFA programs of Payette, Homedale and Fruitland High Schools of Idaho, and Ontario High School of Oregon to purchase new equipment, help students participate in educational events and competitions, and further enhance practical, hands-on agricultural education.

“For more than a quarter of a century, the Onion Showcase has been an important event in our local onion grower community,” said Deron Beck, Nunhems USA Onion Sales Specialist. “Nunhems is honored to host it and, more importantly, to take the opportunity to support the future of our industry.”
Onions are big business in the Treasure Valley. Local growers plant approximately 22,000 acres of onions each year, contributing millions of dollars to the local economy.
The Nunhems Onion Showcase is one of the Valley’s longest-running industry events. Now in its 28th consecutive year, it provides an opportunity for growers from around the area, across the country – and in some cases, around the globe – to learn about new and established onion varieties and interact directly with Nunhems breeders, researchers and other staff.
