Starting 15 September 2011, Mr. Dr. Ir. Niels Louwaars (53) will be appointed as the new director of Plantum NL. He will take over Aad van Elsens position. After finishing his studies at the Agricultural University Wageningen Niels fulfilled several positions within the plant reproduction material sector. Here, he gained a lot of technical and subject-related knowledge as well as a wide involvement in several relevant dossiers within the sector. Understandably, the Plantum NL board is very pleased with Niels Louwaars’ appointment.
After finishing his studies in the field of plant breeding, for several years, Niels worked at seed related projects in the tropics. From 1992 onwards, he fulfilled research and management positions within Wageningen UR (University and Research). For instance, the last few years he worked for the Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands (Centrum voor Genetische Bronnen Nederland). Furthermore, he worked as an international consultant and he was a member of the Plant Variety Rights Chamber of the court in The Hague. Due to these experiences, he gained a wide expertise concerning policy, legislation, seed production and quality and biodiversity.
Aad van Elsen, the current director is very content with Louwaars’ appointment. He knows him as someone who is very familiar with the work field and expects that his fresh way of looking at things can bring parties closer together.
Chairman Nico Jongerius: “The board unanimously feels that Niels is the right man for the job. We expect that, due to his individual qualities, knowledge and (international) contacts he will be a great asset to the entire plant reproduction material sector”.
