Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture launches redesigned homepage for the Global Information System (GLIS) on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Rome, Italy
April 7, 2025

The Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculturelaunched the newly redesigned homepage for the Global Information System (GLIS) on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture today..

"Our goal is to provide a more user-friendly and efficient global platform for our community, and we are excited to introduce these improvements to the portal of the Global Information System," said International Treaty Secretary, Kent Nnadozie.

The new GLIS portal features a smooth, intuitive design that makes it easier for users to navigate and access relevant information. “The updates we have incorporated reflect our commitment to leveraging technology to support the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, and to provide valuable digital resources to our varied stakeholders”, Secretary Nnadozie reiterated.

The updates include a number of new elements, such as new content, a modern layout and a suite of new functions designed to enhance user experience and accessibility. Key enhancements include:

  • Improved user interface and responsive design: A new and modern layout simplifies navigation for enhanced user experience, including redesigned icons and significant improvements in the key categories and channels. The responsive design ensures seamless access across all devices, including smartphones and tablets.
  • Enhanced search functionality: The new search box at the top of the homepage delivers results from all three major repositories simultaneously: Directory of Links, Farmers' Rights Inventory on national measures, best practices and lessons learned, and PGRFA Toolbox. This makes it easier for users to find information more quickly and efficiently without having to search each resource separately.

The key categories on the homepage now give more prominence to organizations and users by providing a direct link to the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) registrants and the World Information and Early Warning System on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (WIEWS) institutions, as recommended by the Scientific Advisory Committee on the Global Information System.

The Directory of Links has been expanded with new records, now available in all six official languages of the United Nations, reaching more than 400 resources that refer to sources of plant genetic material, research and innovation, and documentation, among the main categories.

The Secretariat has also released and linked a quick reference guide on the GLIS homepage for users wishing to assign DOIs to their PGRFA.

The redesigned GLIS homepage is part of Treaty’s ongoing efforts to enhance the functionality of and accessibility to its digital resources, in particular the GLIS Portal, which was first launched in 2011. Users can expect regular updates and new features as the Secretariat continues to innovate and respond to the needs of the International Treaty community.

The PGRFA community is invited to collaborate by providing feedback and suggesting relevant new resources for publication in the Directory, changes to existing entries, and other observations that could help further improve the GLIS portal.
