The Iowa State University Seed Science Center (SSC) is excited to announce a new advanced seed pathology course, Developing & Validating Seed Health Assays, offered online by the American Phytopathological Society (APS). Organized by the SSC’s Dr. Gary Munkvold and Dr. Lindsey du Toit of Washington State University, two leading experts in seed pathology, this course is designed for professionals in research, industry, and regulatory settings who are looking to deepen their expertise in seed health testing. Experts from academia, industry, and regulatory agencies will present sessions.
Running from February 11 – April 15, 2025, the course will feature live sessions every Tuesday from 9:00 – 10:15 AM (US Central Time), with the option to attend live or view recordings.
"Seed health testing is essential for maintaining global food security, and this course will provide participants with the tools and knowledge needed to develop and validate effective assays,” said Dr. Munkvold.
Participants will explore key topics such as:
- Essential components of seed health assay development and validation
- Validation processes implemented by regional, national, and international agencies
- Real-world case studies of seed health testing method validation
- Best practices for publishing seed health assays, with insights for editors and reviewers
“Understanding how to rigorously validate seed health assays is crucial for ensuring seed quality and preventing the spread of harmful pathogens,” Dr. Munkvold added. “This course will provide insights tailored to professionals working in seed science and regulatory roles.”
This course builds on the Seed Pathology Fundamentals series and is part of an ongoing effort to meet the global demand for seed pathology education and training.
