Surpassing the comparison in looks and taste, this new patty pan squash wins high marks for maturing fast and early, while also offering the “cute” factor for vegetable décor.
PanAmerican Seed® is pleased to accept a 2025 All-America Selections National Award for its new Summer Squash Green Lightning – a green-striped patty pan type with vivid colouration and exceptional yield. Green Lightning squash fruit grows on a vigourous bush plant habit, and its sweet flavour inspires gardeners and fresh market shoppers to return again and again. This variety was given high marks for maturing fast and early (40-45 days), setting it apart from other patty pans, to be one of the first squash harvested during the season.
The scallop disc fruit shape with its attractive green striping has also been deemed “cute-pretty” for use in home vegetable décor, looking as good on the counter as it is on the plate.
Some of the AAS judges’ comments during trial evaluations include:
“Unique color, very eye catching. Nice gloss. Small seed cavity. Good eating quality.”
“Very interesting bicolour and a prolific producer.”
“This entry not only looked better, but also tasted better than the comparison. The colour and pattern of the squash was novel and cute-pretty enough to use as a decoration. This squash had a nice robust flavour that stood up to added seasonings when cooked.”
“PanAmerican Seed Vegetables is thrilled that Green Lightning Summer Squash has passed the test with trial locations. It truly is an exceptional patty pan,” says Isabel Branstrom, PanAmerican Seed Vegetables Product Development Manager. “I like it best harvested at the palm-size stage for the most tender flavour, but it’s the vivid colour that really makes it stand out.”
AAS winners receive special promotion, marketing and recognition in consumer media through the organization. Be sure to include NEW Summer Squash Green Lightning to your vegetables/edibles assortment. Seed is available for immediate sales. Contact your preferred distributor to place an order.
