Dr. Palloma Morais has completed her first year as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Iowa State University (ISU) Seed Science Center (SSC), where she has made significant strides in advancing seed pathology research. Under the guidance of Dr. Gary Munkvold, Dr. Morais has concentrated on exploring innovative methods for seed disinfection in maize seeds inoculated with Maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) and investigating the relationship between seed contamination and transmission. Her work has been important in propelling the SSC research initiatives in this critical field.
Dr. Morais brings a rich background of academic and professional experience to her role at the SSC. She earned her PhD in Agronomy/Fitotecnia, specializing in Seed Production and Technology, from the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) in Brazil, where her research focused on the cryopreservation of Coffea canephora seeds. Her connection to ISU began during an exchange program from November 2021 to January 2023, where she contributed to maize breeding research focusing on double haploids under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Lubberstedt.
Dr. Morais's expertise is further highlighted by her proficiency in molecular techniques, including DNA/RNA purification, PCR, qPCR, and serological methods such as ELISA. She also has extensive hands-on experience with seed health testing across various countries, adapting to different crops and conditions following National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) standards. This diverse skill set makes her an invaluable asset to ISU’s ongoing research in seed pathology.
“I am thrilled to be part of Iowa State University's community,” said Dr. Morais. “The dynamic and innovative environment has been incredibly rewarding, and I feel very fortunate to contribute to and grow with the Seed Science Center and the broader scientific community.”
Dr. Morais plans to continue developing her research skills by pursuing advanced training and gaining more experience in her field. She is interested in applying these skills in an academic setting as a research professor, focusing on teaching and conducting research.
