The three leaflets in the Biocontol in Selected Crops (Lutte Biologique) series focus on grapevine, tomato and maize. Each leaflet examines the crop’s place in European agriculture and the major threats to production, before exploring the biocontrol options available.

For grapevine production, for example, a range of biological controls are possible against common pests such as grape berry and European grapevine moths and diseases such as downy and powdery mildew. However, there are significant bottlenecks to their wider use in European agriculture, and the leaflet identifies these and recommends measures which can be taken to overcome them.

These include recommendations for research and development, for policy makers and regulators, for education, training and communication, and for the biocontrol industry and distributors.

The French version of the fifth leaflet in the Training in IPM series (Controlling Tuta absoluta , a new invasive pest in Europe or Lutte contre Tuta absoluta , un nouveau ravageur qui envahit l'Europe), has been written by researchers at Spain’s IRTA research institute in Cabrils. They outline the range of measures which can be taken to control this tiny moth, which was first found in Spain in 2006 and has since spread around the Mediterranean basin and to countries in both central and northern Europe.
