Sustainable, eight-hectare production location in Luttelgeest
Vegetable breeding company Enza Zaden officially gave the go-ahead today for the construction of their own sustainable, eight-hectare production location in Luttelgeest, in the province of Flevoland. At this new site Vitalis organic seed will be produced for sales to professional organic growers worldwide. It concerns mostly organic sweet pepper and cucumber seed, but organic lettuce and leek seed will also be produced. The first seeds are expected to be sown from April 2024.
Revealing construction sign
Allison Thomas, Chief Operations Officer, and Dirk Neelis, Chief Financial Officer at Enza Zaden, revealed the construction sign, in the company of invited guests and construction partners involved, formally marking the start of construction work on the organic production location. Allison Thomas: “As the world's population continues to grow, so does the need for healthy food. We’re also seeing the demand for organic seed increase for, among others, sweet pepper and cucumber. This is why we’re building this new, sustainable production location for Vitalis Organic Seeds in Luttelgeest. This is in line with our goal: breeding to feed the world and creating value for sustainable life and living.”
Sustainability in mind
Construction of three hectares of greenhouses will get under way first on the eight-hectare site. As well as greenhouses, there will be a seed production building, a seed extraction building, a large basin and a helophyte filter, or biofilter, for purification of waste water. In order to produce vegetable seeds as sustainably as possible, amongst other things, the family company will be installing over 900 solar panels on the roofs. In the 7000 m2 basin, with a capacity of nearly 3 Olympic-size swimming pools, rainwater is collected and this is expected to be enough to meet the site’s total water need. In the near future, the toilets, too, are going to be flushed using rainwater.

Duurzame productielocatie in Luttelgeest
Het groenteveredelingsbedrijf Enza Zaden heeft vandaag het officiële startsein gegeven voor de bouw van een eigen duurzame productielocatie van acht hectare in Luttelgeest, Flevoland. Op deze nieuw te bouwen locatie zal Vitalis biologisch zaad geproduceerd worden voor verkoop aan professionele biologische telers wereldwijd. Het betreft voornamelijk biologisch paprika- en komkommerzaad, maar er zal ook biologisch sla- en preizaad worden geproduceerd. Verwachting is dat vanaf april 2024 de eerste zaden gezaaid worden.
Onthulling bouwbord
Allison Thomas, Chief Operations Officer en Dirk Neelis, Chief Financial Officer van Enza Zaden onthulden, in het gezelschap van genodigden en betrokken bouwpartners, het bouwbord en gaven hiermee het startsein voor de bouw van de biologische productielocatie. Allison Thomas: “De wereldbevolking groeit en ook de behoefte aan gezonde voeding. Ook zien we dat de vraag naar biologisch zaad toeneemt, onder meer voor paprika en komkommer. Daarom bouwen wij deze nieuwe, duurzame productielocatie voor Vitalis Biologische Zaden in Luttelgeest. Dit past binnen ons doel om te veredelen om de wereld te voeden en waarde creëren voor duurzaam leven en een duurzame levensstijl.”
Oog voor duurzaamheid
Op het terrein van acht hectare wordt gestart met de bouw van drie hectare kassen. Naast kassen komen er een zaadproductiegebouw, een zaadextractiegebouw, een groot bassin en een helofytenfilter, ofwel een biofilter voor de zuivering van afvalwater. Om zo duurzaam mogelijk groentezaden te gaan produceren, plaatst het familiebedrijf onder andere ruim 900 zonnepanelen op de daken. In het bassin van 7000 m2, met een inhoud van bijna drie olympische zwembaden, wordt regenwater opgevangen waarmee naar verwachting aan de totale waterbehoefte van de locatie kan worden voldaan. Ook worden de toiletten straks doorgespoeld met regenwater.
