Yesterday, we announced plans to expand our operations to Calhoun County. We have purchased the L.B. Wannamaker Seed Co. facility that has operated for many years and will repurpose it as a cover crop production facility and SouthLand Wildlife Seed retail storefront. The new facility will be located at 101 Mill St, St. Matthews, SC, 29835 and we can be contacted at 803-874-3011.
As many know, Mixon Seed and L.B. Wannamaker have rich histories in the seed industry in the Southeast. Mr. Danny Mixon and Mr. Luther Wannamaker set the standard for the row crop and wildlife markets, respectively. We, as a team, are thrilled about the opportunity to carry these legacies forward and help grow the agribusiness industry in our state.
Cover crops are one of the primary tools being used to advance the area of Climate Smart Agriculture, the concept that production ag can help alleviate the effects of climate change through carbon sequestration. We are investing in the technology and infrastructure needed to produce and distribute the seed at the scale required.
Wildlife seed and habitat restoration have been important businesses, with COVID only increasing the demand. While these products provide supplemental food sources to wildlife species, they also aid in land preservation and conservation. With a new retail storefront, we hope to make these seeds more easily accessible.
While we’re excited about these growth prospects, collaboration is necessary to take on today’s challenges. We will work with land grant universities like SC State and Clemson to find the right technologies, work with local farmers to produce the seeds, utilize the upgraded facility to clean and blend those seeds, and then work with our retail partners to distribute them into the hands of the farmers.
This expansion could not have been possible without the support and aid from the teams at the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and Calhoun County Economic Development. Thank you for your continued support of Mixon Seed Service and South Carolina agriculture.
